BENEFITS OF BECOMING A  CAPA MEMBER:

CAPA’s 700+ members (465+ lifetime members) form an extensive network in all sectors of pathology practice in North America and other parts of the world, including academic, private and industrial institutions. CAPA membership puts you right in contact with many other members in the CAPA community.

CAPA holds its annual meeting in conjunction with USCAP meeting and discusses diverse range of issues and topics important to its members. It has employed different formats and covered many topics, including scientific and research collaborations, career development and employment opportunities. CAPA also offers diagnostic pathology courses and various online CME opportunities, which have become very popular among its members.

Pathologists-in-training are encouraged to become Associate members. CAPA holds its annual Best Abstract Awards with certificates and cash awards. Many CAPA members are involved in fellowship programs. The Resident Subcommittee of the Career Development Committee is actively engaged in mentoring new residents and fellows.

All committees are open to all CAPA members and encourage their active participation.

MEMBERSHIP CLASSES AND DUES:

CAPA Membership Classes

CAPA has the following standard classes of member: (a) Lifetime member; (b) Regular member and (c) Associate member. CAPA also has the following affiliated classes of member: (a) Educational member; (b) Visiting member. Only one class of membership may be held at any one time by any member of CAPA.

Standard Classes of Member

(a) Lifetime member

Any legally qualified physician who identifies with Chinese culture and is practicing pathology in North America. Lifetime member is required to pay the lifetime membership fee. The amount of lifetime membership fee shall be determined by the Board of Directors (BOD) and subject to changes. Lifetime member shall have the general right to vote regarding the overall affairs of the Association, including changes to its Bylaws and Articles of the Incorporation; and to vote for, or to serve as officers of the Association in CAPA elections.

Amendment (02/2022) – Membership Eligibility: Any non-physician, licensed PhD who identifies with Chinese culture and is board certified in pathology subspecialties and is practicing pathology in a CLIA and/or CAP-accredited clinical laboratory in North America.

(b) Regular Member

Any legally qualified physician who identifies with Chinese culture and is practicing pathology in North America.  Regular member is required to pay the annual membership fee. The amount of annual membership fee shall be determined by the BOD and subject to changes. Regular members shall have the general right to vote regarding the overall affairs of the Association, including changes to its Bylaws and Articles of the Incorporation; and to vote for, or to serve as officers of the Association in CAPA elections.

(c) Associate Member

Any person who is a legally qualified physician who identifies with Chinese culture and is actively engaging in training for a career in pathology in a training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as a resident or fellow shall be eligible for membership as an associate member.  No membership fee is required for associate members. Associate members do not have the general right to vote regarding the overall affairs of the Association, including changes to its Bylaws and Articles of the Incorporation. They are not eligible to vote or be voted in CAPA elections. However, associate members shall have right for other benefits of CAPA including online or live pathology courses sponsored by CAPA as well as other CAPA activities.

Affiliate Classes of Member 

(a) Educational membership

Any person who is a legally qualified physician who identifies without Chinese culture and is actively engaging in training for a career in pathology in a training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as a resident or fellow shall be eligible for membership as an educational member with a reference from lifetime member or regular member recognized as such category. No membership fee is required for educational members. Educational members do not have the general right to vote regarding the overall affairs of the Association, including changes to its Bylaws and Articles of the Incorporation. They are not eligible to vote or be voted in CAPA elections. However, educational members shall have right for other benefits of CAPA including online or live pathology courses sponsored by CAPA as well as other CAPA activities.

(b) Visiting membership

Any legally qualified physician who identifies without Chinese culture and is practicing pathology in North America or any non-physician, licensed PhD who identifies without Chinese culture and is board certified in pathology subspecialties and is practicing pathology in a CLIA and/or CAP-accredited clinical laboratory in North America with a reference from lifetime member or regular member recognized as such category. Visiting member is required to pay the annual membership fee. The amount of annual membership fee shall be determined by the BOD and subject to changes. Visiting members do not have the general right to vote regarding the overall affairs of the Association, including changes to its Bylaws and Articles of the Incorporation. They are not eligible to vote or be voted in CAPA elections. However, visiting members shall have right for other benefits of CAPA including online or live pathology courses sponsored by CAPA as well as other CAPA activities.

CAPA Membership Dues

CAPA relies in large part on its members’ generous support for all its activities. The majority of membership dues go to annual meeting. All CAPA positions are held by volunteers. Please attend the annual meeting to see the detailed financial report. The categories of membership include:

  • Lifetime membership: $800/lifetime
  • Regular membership: $80/year
  • Associate membership: Free, only for pathologists-in-training
  • Affiliate classes of membership: Educational membership (free for pathologists-in-training); Visiting membership ($100/year).

CAPA Membership Cycle:

Life time members have lifetime membership. The annual regular membership is valid for one year starting from the date when the membership fee is paid. Associate membership is expired when the pathology-training is completed. You may start to pay next year’s membership due three months before your membership is expired.

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER:

Follow the following steps to submit your information and then pay membership fee. PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTION CAREFULLY TO AVOID DELAYED AND EVEN LOST APPLICATIONS! Please note this is a MULTI-STEP process. You need to remember your username and password to complete the process.

  • Step 1: Using the following link to enter and submit your information to membership committee. Your application will be reviewed by the membership committee. The review process may take one to two weeks. The membership committee will inform you through email when your application is approved.

  • Step 2: If you apply for a membership with membership due, pleas pay membership due online with PayPal or Credit Card. After your membership is approved, you can go to CAPA website to log in member portal using your username and password, then use the link “Pay membership due” to pay the membership due. You will receive a confirmation email and receipt after your payment is successfully processed.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED IN CAPA:

CAPA is a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers. Please fill out the your interest in the membership application form to volunteer for committee activities if interested,. If you wish spend more time and effort, you can nominate yourself or ask another member to nominate you during the open election to become an executive committee (EC) member or president-elect. The minimum qualification for EC member and president-elect is demonstrating years of interest in CAPA and willingness to serve the public benefits of CAPA. Demonstration of leadership and organizational skills is highly desirable for president-elect.
